AI is developing daily and helping humanity with many chores, such as figuring out mathematical problems, writing code, suggesting creative ideas, etc., and people get used to it quickly.  This is what John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky probably had in mind when they introduced the first versions of AI in 1956.  They were stunned by the potential of a machine to solve complex puzzles faster than humans.

However, teaching Artificial Intelligence to win a chess match is somewhat easy. Teaching a machine what emotions are and how to replicate them would present challenges. And this is what today’s IT scientists are doing. In this blog, we will find out how successful they are.  But first, let’s define emotional intelligence and state why humans need it.

What is EI? Why is it Essential for Humans?

Emotional intelligence (EI) is how we handle our emotions and connect with others. It’s the key to building solid and meaningful relationships whether we chat online, meet face-to-face, or interact at work or home. Mastering EI can make a huge difference in how leaders inspire and motivate their teams.

Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer introduced emotional intelligence in the 1990s, and Daniel Goleman later brought it into the spotlight. While the concept of emotional quotient (EQ) is widely recognized, some psychologists argue that it doesn’t hold up as well as general intelligence because it’s harder to measure with standard tests.


What is EI in AI?

Emotional Intelligence in AI, also known as Emotion AI or Affective Computing, is quickly becoming one of the most fascinating areas of technology. But what exactly does this mean? Chat GPT and Empathy in Healthcare - Case Study

If you've ever posted a medical question on a forum like Reddit's r/AskDocs, you might have wondered who's behind the responses you receive. Recent research sheds light on this intriguing area, showing that an AI assistant like ChatGPT could be more effective than traditional physicians in answering these online queries.

Why This Matters

As digital healthcare expands, more patients turn to social media for health-related questions. While this is great for accessibility, it also puts much pressure on healthcare professionals to manage these inquiries alongside their busy schedules. Enter AI assistants like ChatGPT. These tools promise to take some of this load off the shoulders of clinicians by providing high-quality responses that can be reviewed later.

The Study Unpacked

In a recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, researchers examined how well ChatGPT performs compared to human physicians when answering patient questions on social media. They randomly selected 195 exchanges from r/AskDocs, a popular public forum, and compared responses from ChatGPT with those from licensed healthcare professionals. The aim was to see how each performed regarding quality and empathy, scored on a scale from 1 to 5.

The researchers removed all personal information to protect patient privacy, complying with HIPAA standards. They also compared the length of responses and evaluated which were preferred based on quality and empathy ratings.

What They Found

Here’s the standout result: ChatGPT responses were preferred over physicians’ responses in 78.6% of cases. Even when comparing ChatGPT's reactions to the lengthiest ones from physicians, ChatGPT scored higher for quality and empathy.

Specifically, 78.5% of responses from ChatGPT were rated as 'good' or 'very good,' compared to just 22.1% of physician responses. Regarding empathy, ChatGPT responses received a rating of 'empathetic' or 'very empathetic' 45.1% of the time, while physicians scored just 4.6%. That's nearly ten times more empathetic!

Why This Could Be a Game-Changer

Managing patient inquiries can be incredibly time-consuming. Each new message can add about 2.3 minutes of extra work for healthcare professionals, contributing to burnout. Many of these questions are routine and don’t require a physician's specialized knowledge—like appointment details or test results. This is where AI could step in, offering quick and consistent responses that save time for medical staff.

Imagine a scenario where patients receive prompt, accurate responses to their queries without adding to the workload of busy clinicians. This could reduce unnecessary clinic visits and help patients with mobility issues or non-standard work hours. For some, receiving timely answers could lead to better adherence to health regimens.

This study shows that AI tools like ChatGPT have the potential to impact online patient interactions significantly. However, more research is needed before these tools become a staple in clinical settings. Randomized clinical trials should be conducted to explore their effects on clinician burnout and overall healthcare delivery.

Understanding emotions is hard even for us. As hard as it is to learn AI to understand feelings, we both did a great job—humans at teaching and AI at implementing EI in its skillset. It's fascinating to think about how these advancements might continue to shape our digital experiences. The goal is to create more empathetic machines and enrich our interactions with technology, making them feel more intuitive and supportive.

In essence, the future of emotional AI is not just about building more intelligent machines but about fostering a deeper connection between technology and its users.
